If you don’t own it, buy it right now! I read most of this book as an introduction to the C Programming language for a college course.
I also didn’t really care to hear much about what changed between pre-standard C and ANSI C; the second edition treats this transition as a central concern of each and every chapter. Thought Ritcbie made a typo, huh? Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands. One of C’s inventors, Dennis Ritchie, paired with Brian Kernighan to produce a slim introduction to programming in it and, by extension, programming in general ; the book has never been out of print since, and ritcuie fact has not been revised since the 2nd edition covering the ANSI standard for C in the late ’80s.
I can’t say I learned how to program C using this book — that distinction goes to the long-forgotten Microsoft Quick C for Windows manuals and a reference manual put out by the Waite Kernigjan.

Adopted as the definitive bible of C this harks back to the good old days of real seat-of-your-pants programming BQE before quiche eaters so is thankfully devoid of the dreadful mess that object oriented programming made of this most simplistically elegant of programming languages.
While I certainly don’t disagree with the designation of this book as a “classic,” I would recommend the new guy to the C club in or later look somewhere else. This book is a fascinating read and has great discussions about the implementations of classic UNIX commands and other systems programming topics.

I read this years ago when I was first taking C. Brian Wilson Kernighan is a computer scientist who worked at Bell Labs alongside Unix creators Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and contributed greatly to Unix and its school of thought.
But while my heart might pump pure computation, my ass rests firmly before the loom of systems programming; short-lived, sweaty, heavy-breathed infatuations with Haskell, Erlang, and most recently Scala have left indelible imprints, but only on a mind aimed like a missile at hacking UNIX applications on supercomputers–or whatever’s bigger. You already recently rated this item. This book is correspondingly small, yet it is comprehensive.

Truly the C Bible If only all programming books were this succinct and to the point The book was central to the development and popularization of the C programming language and is still widely read and used today. As any programmer worth his salt will tell you, C is one of the most useful languages, and at least basic knowledge is mandatory. His explanation of structures is of advanced level which is a requirement.
