That said, I might consider picking up l other book, Ciao America! Still there are many Italians who yearn for a better country, but no longer seem to be able to dream the dream. Un viaggio metaforico, autocritico e divertente attraverso il nostro modo di vivere oggi. However, it was only when I read in the last pages of the book after the conclusion of the story that this book was a number 1 seller in Italy and not America that I realized why the book didn’t absolutely grab me.

Not just a book about Italy but a book about the culture and the inner workings of the minds of real Italian people! He claimed the few bad ones were on the stage, or the cinema screen.
This was also the first book that I couldn’t or didn’t want to finish because it was just so Una terra di luce e profumi, aperitivi al tramonto, mattoni a vista e indigeni cordiali. For anyone italianni wants to understand the complexities of Italy in a much more informed and nuanced way, I would recommend giving this little book a miss and trying Tobias Jones’s “The Dark Heart of Italy”. The author is humorous and clearly well educated on his subject. Beppe Severgnini’s erudite observations make me fall in love with Italy all over again. Trivia About La Bella Figura: Many times I found the author just blabbing and jabbering about things that were important to him, not so much the reader.
It’s alluring, but complicated. I would have been better off making a photocopy of those pages to take to Italy and not wasting two weeks that could have been spent reading travel books hint, hint, an Italian wouldn’t mind breaking copyright for that purpose.

Dieci giorni, trenta luoghi. I really enjoyed his writing technique and his descriptive imagery. It’s the kind of place that can have you fuming and then purring in the space of a hundred meters, or in the course of ten minutes.
That is, I thought that this book was something it was not.
