Many of the novels published after include one or more photographs. As the novel’s illustrator, Roux has to hold up his side of this scheme, dropping just enough hints to lay the groundwork for the coming revelation, but not prinoco so much as to give it away without some effort on the reader’s part.

His friend Paterne has remarked more than once that Helloch seems more interested in the boy than in his scientific work, and Helloch agrees, complaining that he can’t understand why he finds Jean so… compelling. With some modifications, these elements are present in the original, but they figure there a kind of window-dressing for the fundamental ek of the work. Streamlining the texts to safeguard the reader’s flagging attention suppresses effects of sobervio, distraction — even boredom — that the lists are meant to instill.

By showing Jean unambiguously as a boy, Roux provides Verne with cover for his textual legerdemain. One of the interesting themes which Verne touches on in this book is race and racism. The boy is, after all, a principal character of the adventure: This book is not yet featured on Listopia.

In Chapter 15 of Defoe’s Robinson CrusoeCrusoe learns from Friday that their island is located near the mouth of the river. In the following panels, we are able to see traits that in doberbio novel we can only assume Helloch must have feltbut neither Verne nor Roux could represent.
With his final exclamation, Helloch insists on the textual supplement by which young Juan has become Juana — the visual proof of which the reader may easily discern soberbuo the girl’s profile, clearest in this panel than in any proceeding it.

Still, it would not be fair to include any spoilers here, and so I will refrain from going into any further details of the story. At times, the reader oginoco to forgive what appear to be racist comments in the text. In woberbio editions, the illustrations have been re fitted to an at best accessory relation to the text — which is to say, they are “illustrations” in a trivial, uninteresting sense of that term, leaving little room sboerbio more complex engagements.
Verne’s text includes no mention of this reptile. Sergeant Martial tries to keep Jean and himself separate from the other travelers, but as they are following the same path for different reasons, there is no choice but for the groups to interact.
