A Little Princess as told by Gorey This is a spot where I post photos and personal observations on pieces from my Edward Gorey collection. This is the perfect book to read to your child when they are going through one of their edware “It’s not faaaaaaaaair” phases.
Even with the plot twists and turns, I find The Hapless Child to be a rather straightforward tale, and for me it less engaging than his more non-linear stories which invite the reader chuld join in and “fill in the chipd.
I thought they were for kids. That story was very sad, thw the signature matter-of-fact tone which Gorey uses to present the story adds charm? The family layer ships her off to boarding school where she punished by teachers and bullied by fellow classmates. Can you imagine a contemporary cartoon book depicting an axe-murdered child like this?

The 1st hardcover in DJ was published by Dodd Mead in this book sometimes is called a reprint, but it is the first American hardcover edition. Delving into his complete works for a project recently, it dawned on me how my impression of this prolific writer had been cemented by my familiarity with just one or two of his books — like The Gashleycrumb Tiniesa deliciously morbid, alphabetical catalog of 26 children’s deaths.

Remembering that artwork in his published books is reproduced life size to his original drawings, it is no small feat that Gorey was able to put so many details into each image. The art is creepy and beautiful.

The Hapless Child Hardcover Lovely little story for an adult or child, telling the story of little Charlotte Sophia, whose life drastically alters from living with parents who were ‘kind and well-to-do’ A fun fact about The Hapless Child is that every drawing in the book contains a small black creature cavorting about the scene.
If so, do you know where it is in The Golden Bat it is the only one I can’t find? Although he would frequently state that his formal art training was “negligible”, Gorey studied art for one semester at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago ineventually becoming a professional illustrator.
