It’s a story that some have compared to The Da Vinci Code, with the observation that the latter is Foucalt’s Pendulum for morons. No, the novel is difficult because it requires the penndel to read and understand a whole substructure of pendek that can be loosely classified as occult, or at least marginally so, otherwise a grand majority of the in-jokes and satire would be lost on the reader.
Is Foucault’s Pendulum a difficult read? Many people won’t enjoy reading this book for this very reason, and I have no argument with that. You will be confused and overwhelmed. Ardenti’s disappearance, and his original “coded manuscript”, seem to have no other explanation.
Also, considering the fact that the author and the three protagonists are all multilingual intellectuals with doctorates in literature and medieval history, it would help to be similarly educated.
