Petrova was my favourite sister when I was a kid, and she still is today — while technically capable with her dance and acting classes, her interests were really in cars and planes. The vocabulary was more advanced than many adult books of today. I want to read this book. Rational, ambitious, learning from her past mistakes, unaware of her beauty and ready to sacrifice her savings to help paying the bills, the much needed clothes and so on… However, the mystery of this novel is Posy.
This seems disloyal to lovely Streatfeild, but while mostly harmless this was really About Dancing Shoes Aunt Cora is determined to turn two orphans, perky Hilary and sullen Rachel, into members of her dance troupe.
Early in s, she decided to stop writing adult novels, but did write some autobiographical novels, such as A Vicarage Family in Other books in the series. As a result, most of the adults around her think that Rachel’s a dnacing and streatfeikd sister. Much more like I was than most child characters.
I also love the relationship between Rachel and her Uncle Tom–as I mentioned in my review of Ballet Shoes, Streatfeild does a good job of including positive male role models even in her female-centric books. Emily Josephine Eliza Doyle I had to keep reminding myself when it was written before I could continue.

However, six years have passed until I actually decided: It matters even less. She’s a bit lazy, and I found her to be rather selfish, But I think that out of the two, Rachel is the real protagonist, and so I enjoyed the book for most part. Noel Streatfeild’s beautiful book bewitched me with its simplicity, charm and humour.
The “Shoe” books are about dreaming.

Pauline is destined for the movies. It seems like it’s time for my second childhood! Not most of them, anyway. The best of the 3 “Shoes” books that I’ve read. Storm, Pursey and even Rachel albeit less successfully than the others regularly stand up to Aunt Cora in a way that no one ever dares to do to Aunt Claudia in Skating Shoes. Apr 03, Yvensong rated it really liked it Shelves: Hilary is such a strong character that I find it very hard to believe that she would calmly put up with Rachel’s tantrums about her working at ballet without answering back and I don’t see why the two of them are only able to have a true heart to heart about it at the very end of the book.
W and her daughter Dulcie as it was to read the parts with Umbridge in the Harry Potter books. But it wasn’t meant to be, not even at the time. Do you remember in that movie called “You’ve Got Mail” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan where Meg is sitting in Fox Books and is sort of watching everything around her both sadly and contemplatively, because she lost her haven of a bookstore, but she loves seeing others who love books–even if it’s at the corporation that she dislikes?
Louisa Jane Ramsay Every child in a Streatfeild book has a vocation, found by hook or by crook, and they are intensely content once finding it.
Posy is developing into a brilliant ballet dancer.

But the beauty remains in both. My friends Bill and Elaine have a four year old who I sometimes watch for them, and I was trying to think up creative alternatives to watching “Ratatouille” for the 17th time. Hers is a moral fable that all girls could do with remembering. That’s not what they’re for. Because of the Depression, they get training to earn money as performers on stage. For any little girl who has dreamed of leaving her family behind and living in a rambling old house full of adults who are not her parents, and enjoy spoiling you just a bit.

Stay in Touch Sign up. The 3 adopted girls are parent-less, there’s a struggle for money, they’re being raised and educated by a lovely team of women, in a bit of a patchwork of a home.
Jun 20, Cathy rated it really liked it Shelves: Horrible Harry Says Goodbye. As they have no way to contact or track him down, Sylvia and Nana take in boarders to make ends meet, including Mr. Lists with This Book. By stteatfeild this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
Gum does not return in the promised five years and the money is almost nowl. Pauline could act and recite and Posy wasn’t very far from being a professional ballerina.
Thankfully, I liked Dancing Shoes, so I wasn’t disappointed: She is vividly practical in her skills and her “yes, well, sboes can dance but I’m going to finish building my submarine now” attitude is an intense delight. This entertaining and creative children’s book combines themes of dancing, friendship and growing up, accompanied by interesting characters.
Not only is Mrs Winters a mean person who cares only for her selfish daugher Dulcie, they’re doing the wrong sort of dancing!
