This is definitely one of those books I’ll be saving to read again It was great right up until the end, where it felt like the author just decided he was tired of all the intrigue and just killed the book with a contrived showdown that was the most predictable ending that could have taken place.
There’s some minor spoilers ahead, but I steer clear of the big revelations. The changeling alien 1 is the main character of the story, as we see it shift from being a great white shark to a dolphin to finally a human, killing a random person as it does so to take its place.
The Changeling has survived by adapting the forms of many different organisms.
Want to Read saving…. Camuflage to the point I generally like Joe Haldeman, but this book was a bit of a disappointment. On a site in Samoa, they attempt to probe its secrets, but the superdense, superheavy object proves impervious. I hope that it gains in insight whatever it might have lost in immediacy. A mysterious object, found in the depths of the Pacific, guards its secrets from the scientists who have discovered it.

A human-looking immortal who has been with humanity since the stone age Clifford Simak’s “Grotto of the Dancing Deer” impersonates an admiral similar to Theodore Sturgeon’s “Occam’s Scalpel”, though the Sturgeon story is wittier and launches an investigation of a multimillion-year-old alien artefact Arthur C.
This second-half story stagnation hurts the characters as well. Both have the ability to alter their physical shape and become other people or beings, even inanimate objects.
