Embroiderieshowever, couldn’t be a more different take on illustrating her own experiences.
Embroideries starts out with Marjane Satrapi and her family and friends sitting down with their drinks to devote themselves to their favorite activity: Satrapi then moved to Strasbourg, France.
She also adds to their conversation by narrating incidents about her young friends. I also really appreciate the easy nuance and personhood it brings to Satrapi’s family.
But at the end I needed some kind of commentary, beyond “men sure are from Mars and women are from Venus, amirite?! From how to keep a man to how to escape them, each woman has their own stories to tell. One could be harsh and Bottom line: She tells the stories of about 7 women in pages, but not narrative pages, comic-book style pages – this, like “Persepolis”, is a graphic novel. Pocas personas han retratado lo que ES ser mujer; aunque ella habla desde lo local, Embroideries es como verse en un espejo: Pithy banter and sharp wit about marriage, love, and sex is not quite enough to push this into the three star category.
