Mah sewed long hours in a Chinese sweatshop and, after hours, at home; more recently, she opened a modest Chinatown clothes shop. I was remembering how much I enjoyed the Jg Luck Club and when this book was described as a similarly inter-generational story rich in cultural idiosyncrasies and very thoughtful, that resonated with me. Definitely a good story line!
The sisters are sure that they could have stopped it if they’d had just one more conversation with her. I would highly recommend for bome to read this book about family, love, and culture.

I liked how the story moved about in time, but at the mynne there was a lot left to say, and apart from Leon, the characters weren’t as well developed as I would have liked. For a while, these are amusingly colorful characters, warring with each other and with America.

I liked it very much. Suppose mtenne a lifetime of hard work, they’re still stuck in the same apartment in the same neighborhood they started out in. This is a story written by the eldest daughter of an immigrant Chinese family in San Francisco.
For a novel with such a melancholy core, it is surprisingly spry and the prose somehow works an uneasy balance between charming and caustic.
