Brouwers has broken with his mother, years ago, and his first reaction is: Net als Kurt Vonnegut in Slaughterhouse-Five en Arundhati Roy in The God of Small Things probeert Brouwers middels herhaling van triviale zinnen de ellende te benadrukken, maar hij slaagt hier veel minder in dan beide voorgenoemde auteurs, omdat Brouwers een veel minder groot stilist is en ons veel te veel al zelf voorkauwt.

He doesn’t seem to mind, either. Brouwers is good with metaphors and switching between simple and complicated sentences. He’s disrespectful, sexist, pessimistic and down right creepy.

Additionally, Jeroen Brouwers ‘ writing style is far from my cup of tea. Silke Van rated it it was amazing Apr 17, I skipped the four full pages in which Brouwers simply lists the telivison shows that were on during the hours before his mother’s death, because ‘she may have watched this’. They were real and interesting, and I was fascinated and shocked while reading them, which was probably the intended effect.
It is an evening that wreaks havoc on you.
