I’ve played many an equally simple game engine. Advancement Points the only way to mechanically progress your character are only handed out after you describe how you squander away all of the loot you just worked so hard to get.
The GM liked that we were kept in the status-quo by being barbraians encouraged to spent treasure in weird things, and while it did help to create new adventure seeds at first, it wasn’t particularly interesting for long play as we felt we were not accomplishing much.

To me, what makes Burning Wheel such a revelation is that the heart of the game is a set of rules that reward roleplay, and everything else flows from there.
