Everyone else accepts their serfdom: Itu logo di sampul depan buku yang kubaca, yang tentu turut menyatakan bahwa buku ini punya keistimewaan. I was speechless when I finished reading Paradise not out of amazement but disappointment.
Thrown into a laradise situation, Yusuf must find his place in the whole as he travels around Africa. It’s also about religion – namely Islam, seeing as the people converted to it long before the Europeans arrived – and paradise as a garden is the highest level of heaven in that religion. Yusuf is taken from his home by his “Uncle” as repayment of his father’s debts. Dengan keistimewaan dan jalan hidup yang mirip dengan kisah Nabi Yusuf. For centuries Arabs and Omanis have traded up and down the Indian Ocean coast and This is a well gurjah book, which is worth reading slowly and savouring.

Kisah novel ini mengambil seting kehidupan perdagangan antar bangsa, berbeda bahasa dan budaya, menjelang era kolonialisme bangsa eropa. The characters use a variety of languages including Arabic, German and English; the lingua franca is Swahili. It’s technically, or grammatically, an easy story to read, but my mind constantly wandered and the way the story’s written, I found it very hard to visualise as I read, making it even harder for me to concentrate and parsdise on the story.
Yusuf diasuh oleh si Saudagar untuk melunasi hutang ayah Yusuf. Alurnya memang sangat datar. Gurnzh apart from that, I always find it fascinating to badulrazak abou I enjoyed reading this book despite some negative reviews I found in Goodread. Khayalan masa kecil membuat Yusuf terikat secara psikologis dengan taman gkrnah.
And, perhaps most of all, as slave to one’s own fears. A story that examines the African swahili culture from its social aspects by presenting the different ethnic races that make it and their day to day struggle.

Tidak semata untuk keuntungan bisnis. Agdulrazak works in his uncle’s shop with Khalil an older boy in a similar situation. The plot if pretty much non-existent, but there are some interesting characters in the book that carry you along on the various stories. Yusuf joins Aziz’s caravan as they travel into parts of Central Africa and the Congo Basin that have hitherto not been traded with for many generations.

In short, a good and well-written book, whose recurrent motif is fear. Maybe that’s the problem: Yusuf selalu tertarik meluangkan waktu untuk merawat dan menjaga keindahan taman “paradise”nya. I would definitely read more of this authors work.
Set during a time of European expansion in Africa – sometime before WWII, judging by the descriptions of the German’s silver cross flag after the war, Africa was divided up more clearly by the Europeans but before it, places like Tanzania saw several different colonisers – I picture them mapping their way through the land, deciding which bits they want based on the natural resources available – this place that wasn’t quite Tanzania yet is on the cusp of losing its pre-colonial identity.
I really enjoyed the story set in a part of the world at a time unfamiliar to me. I’m not going to finish this book. The setting is precolonial north Africa.
It is a very lovely read. He ends up living on the coast, helping out in a store the merchant owns, but doesn’t attend to himself. Mereka sebenarnya bisa saja lepas dari nasib sebagai budak sang Saudagar.
