memories come in different forms

September 7, 2007

A few buttons...one reads Equal Rights Not Special Rights, one reads Female Disabled and Proud, and another one reads Pride=PowerThis summer I had to put away all my disability paraphernalia [personal belongings] because my Not Dead Yet button and Crip Pride banner weren’t going to really be appropriate for the workplace, even if I was working for the biggest congressional disability rights champion out there. *smile* I rebelled against office policy on ADA Day (hey, it’s ADA Day…) and pinned a huge button to my bag that Mrs. Dart gave me as a gift. Now that button is in a frame as it’s from the signing of the ADA 17 years ago.

I finally got around to pinning all my stuff back on all my bags today. It was kind of ceremonious: I thought of people who gave me the buttons, places where I got them, and what they stand for. With each button and each memory, I have grown. So much has happened just in this past year— who knew a round two inch piece of paper could create so many memories. I wonder if people feel this strongly about shot glasses and matchboxes?

I’m excited about what I’ll collect over this next year.

Interesting thought… The stuff stand for more than just what is stated, but also for memories…And sometimes that is all that we have to share and reflect on where we have been and where we are going…Hoping the collecting and you continue to grow…

cripchick at a rally Just your everyday queer disabled Corean girl living in the South... I admit to being a disability culture nerd who loves making buttons, writing poetry, and exploring intersections between communities, particularly within a radical women of color feminist framework. And baking. My new love consists of pastries and pies.
